Welcome

Welcome everyone to our on-line church service! May our Lord’s blessings and protection be on all of you. Let us open in prayer and commit this service to the Lord.

This morning in our scripture reading, we are going to have a brief look at Jesus’s commission in the Old and New Testaments; then Jesus’s commission to us, the Body of Christ.

Let us turn to Isaiah 61:1-2. In this passage, Isaiah is prophetically proclaiming Jesus’s commission.

“The Spirit of the Lord God is upon Me, Because the Lord has anointed Me, To preach good tidings to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the broken hearted, To proclaim liberty to the captives, And the opening of the prison to those who are bound; 2 To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord, And the day of vengeance of our God; To comfort all who mourn…”

This passage was written about 700 years BC about the Son of God our Lord Jesus Christ. Now as we turn to the gospel of Luke 4:17-20 in the new testament, we see Jesus read this very text and fulfilled this scripture in the hearing of the congregation. This was the start of His ministry on earth.

Now let’s read Luke 4:17-20.

17 And He was handed the book of the prophet Isaiah. And when He had opened the book, He found the place where it was written: 18 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, because He has anointed Me To preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the broken hearted, To proclaim liberty to the captives, And recovery of sight to the blind, To set at liberty those who are oppressed; 19 To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord.” 20 Then He closed the book…

Jesus closed the book in mid-sentence. In Isaiah 61:2 The whole verse says:

To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all who mourn”.

(There are two proclamations)

Why did Jesus leave out the “the day of vengeance? The day of God’s vengeance is in the future. This is the tribulation period mentioned in Revelation the ultimate day of vengeance. I believe Jesus was proclaiming that right now we are living in the “the acceptable year of the Lord”. So what does that mean for us as the Body of Christ?

Let us turn to scripture and find out in Mark 16:15-18. Here we are going to read Jesus’s commission to the Body of Christ, which was shortly before He ascended to heaven. I am reading from Mark 16:15-18

15 And He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. 16 He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned. 17 And these signs will follow those who believe: In My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues; 18 they will take up serpents; and if they drink anything deadly, it will by no means hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.”

This is our commission from Jesus, are you ready? Our responsibility is to be willing and obedient to God’s calling. Jesus said in Matthew 9:37

The harvest is indeed plentiful, but the laborers are few.

There is a revival coming and has already started in the world and we as the Body of Christ must be ready for this revival to be prepared in season and out of season.
Amen

Prayer

I lift up my eyes to the hills.
    From where does my help come?
My help comes from the Lord,
    who made heaven and earth.

He will not let your foot be moved;
    he who keeps you will not slumber.
Behold, he who keeps Israel
    will neither slumber nor sleep.

The Lord is your keeper;
    the Lord is your shade on your right hand.
The sun shall not strike you by day,
    nor the moon by night.

The Lord will keep you from all evil;
    he will keep your life.
The Lord will keep
    your going out and your coming in
    from this time forth and forevermore.
